What it takes
A game in the browser needs the internet: the phones reach it through amoquiz.com. For a hall, a barn or a basement with no connection, use AmoQuiz Desktop, the app for Windows and macOS, on the Pro or Business plan. It runs the game on your laptop, and the phones connect to the laptop over Wi-Fi.
You need:
- AmoQuiz Desktop, downloaded at home: sign in to app.amoquiz.com and open AmoQuiz Desktop in the sidebar and press Download for Windows or Download for macOS;
- a Wi-Fi network that the laptop and every phone join. A router with no internet works. So does a phone’s hotspot.
Before you leave home
Do these while you still have internet:
- Sign in to AmoQuiz Desktop. It signs in through your browser, so it can’t sign in at the venue.
- Download the game to the computer. On the game’s card, choose Download game to computer. When it shows Files on this computer, its pictures, songs and videos are all on the laptop.
- Launch it once in Same Wi‑Fi mode with your own phone (below), so the first run, and any firewall question, happens at home.
At the venue
- Connect the laptop and the TV, and join the laptop to the Wi-Fi.
- Open the game and press Launch. Under How will players connect?, choose Same Wi‑Fi, no internet needed, then Launch. Before it starts, the app checks the files: Files: on this computer means you’re ready.
- The game screen opens with a QR code. Players join the same Wi-Fi, scan it and join, just like online.
The phone link starts with http:// and the laptop’s address on the network, not amoquiz.com. That is how it works with no internet.
What works with no internet
- The whole game: every round, buzzers, scores, the podium.
- Pictures, songs and videos that were downloaded to the computer.
- Your phone as the host remote: Remote game control gives you a link on the same Wi-Fi.
What doesn’t:
- Files that were not downloaded. They need the internet to play.
- Check typed answers with AI. Mark typed answers yourself in Review answers.
- Signing in and the Internet link mode.
The game’s results are saved on the laptop and uploaded to your account when it is next online.
The firewall question
The first time a game starts in this mode, Windows asks whether AmoQuiz may use the network. Allow it, on private and public networks both. If you pressed Cancel, phones can’t reach the laptop until you allow AmoQuiz in Windows Defender Firewall (Allow an app through firewall). On a Mac with the firewall turned on, choose Allow when macOS asks about incoming connections.
If phones can’t open the link at the venue, see Phones can’t join the game.
