How players join
Players scan the QR code on the game screen with their phone’s camera, type a name (or a team name) and press Join. There is no code to type on the AmoQuiz home page: the QR code holds the whole link. If a camera won’t scan, read the link out instead. Online, it looks like play.amoquiz.com/play/ABCD.
What the phone says
“This game is full”
The game has as many players as your plan allows: 3 on Free, 10 on Basic, 100 on Pro, any number on Business. In Teams mode the limit counts teams, one per phone. Upgrade, or ask people to play in teams.
“This name is already taken”
Someone in the game already uses that name. Add an initial or a number.
“This game has ended or the code is no longer valid”
The phone opened the link of an older game, often from a photo of last week’s screen or the browser’s history. Scan the QR code on the screen again.
“This browser can’t be used to play”
The link opened inside another app’s browser (a chat or social app), or in a private window that can’t save anything. Open the page in the phone’s own browser from that app’s menu (⋯ or ⋮, then Open in browser), or scan the code with the camera app instead, or leave private mode.
“Could not connect to the game”
The phone can’t reach the game. Online, check the phone has internet: venue Wi-Fi with a sign-in page is a common cause, so try mobile data. On local Wi-Fi, see below. Then tap Reload.
“You have been removed from this game”
The host removed this player. You can let them back in from the score table with Bring back.
A player’s phone died or they switched phones
Reloading the page, or opening the same link again on the same phone, brings the player back with their name and score.
On another phone, they would join as someone new. Instead, open the Score table in the host panel, choose QR code to reconnect the player next to their name, and let them scan it. If they already joined under another name, use Transfer points to move their score.
Local Wi-Fi: phones can’t open the link
With AmoQuiz Desktop in Same Wi‑Fi mode the phones talk straight to your laptop, so the network matters. Try these in order:
- Same network. Every phone must be on the laptop’s Wi-Fi, not a guest network and not mobile data. On Android, turn mobile data off, or the phone may quietly use it instead. Turn off any VPN.
- The firewall. On Windows, AmoQuiz must be allowed through Windows Defender Firewall on private and public networks. If someone pressed Cancel on the first question, allow it there by hand.
- The right address. If your laptop has several connections (a VPN, a virtual machine, a cable and Wi-Fi), the QR code may point at the wrong one. In the Player connection card, choose another address for this computer and show the new code.
- Client isolation. Many venue and hotel networks stop devices from seeing each other. The app warns you when it suspects it. Use a phone’s hotspot instead: join the laptop and the players to it.
To test from your own phone, open the Access check link from the Player connection card. If it opens, the network is fine and the problem is on the player’s phone.
On an iPhone, open the link in Safari if another browser can’t.
